GIF Format in ShareX

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is unique among ShareX's output formats because it supports animation. ShareX can record your screen and save it as an animated GIF.

Creating GIFs with ShareX

1. Use Screen Recording (GIF) from the capture menu
2. Select the region you want to record
3. ShareX captures your screen activity as a GIF
4. Stop recording to save the animated GIF

GIF Settings in ShareX

Configure in Task Settings → Screen Recorder:

• FPS — Frames per second (15 FPS is good for tutorials, 30 FPS for smooth motion)
• Color depth — 256 colors (GIF limitation)
• Quality — Dithering and color optimization options
• Recording duration — Manual stop or preset length

Limitations to Know

• 256 colors maximum — Not suitable for photo-realistic content
• Large file sizes — GIFs can be much larger than equivalent MP4 videos
• No audio — GIF only supports visual content

Tips

• For longer recordings, consider MP4 instead and use ShareX's video converter
• Keep GIFs short (under 10 seconds) for reasonable file sizes
• Use lower FPS (10-15) for software demos to reduce file size
