GIF Recording in ShareX

ShareX makes it incredibly easy to create animated GIFs from your screen activity. With a single hotkey, you can select a region and start recording a GIF — perfect for sharing quick demos, reactions, or bug reproductions.

How to Record a GIF

1. Press the GIF recording hotkey (default: Ctrl + Shift + Print Screen)
2. Select the region you want to record
3. The recording starts immediately after selection
4. Press the stop button in the recording control bar when finished
5. ShareX processes and saves the GIF, then runs your configured after-capture tasks

Recording Options

The GIF recorder offers several configuration options:

Setting	Description
FPS	Frame rate (15 FPS default — good balance of smoothness and file size)
Quality	Color accuracy vs. file size trade-off
Repeat count	0 = loop forever, N = play N times
Size limit	Maximum dimensions for recorded region
Capture cursor	Include or exclude the mouse cursor

FFmpeg Backend

The GIF recorder is powered by FFmpeg, which provides:

• High-quality color palette generation for better-looking GIFs
• Customizable encoding parameters
• Hardware-accelerated encoding support

Optimization Tips

GIF files can become large quickly. Here are some tips to keep file sizes manageable:

• Lower the FPS — 10-15 FPS is usually sufficient for UI demos
• Keep the region small — Record only the relevant part of the screen
• Limit duration — Keep GIFs short (under 30 seconds) for best results
• Reduce colors — Fewer colors mean smaller files
