Screen Capture - ShareX Feature for Windows

Screen Capture in ShareX — fullscreen, region, active window. Setup tips, real-world workflows and how this feature works in the free Windows app.

Screen Capture Modes

ShareX offers a comprehensive set of screen capture modes that cover virtually every scenario. Whether you need a quick full-screen snapshot or a precise region capture, ShareX has you covered with over a dozen distinct capture methods.

Fullscreen Capture

Capture your entire monitor (or all monitors in a multi-monitor setup) with a single hotkey. This is perfect for capturing everything visible on screen, including taskbars, desktop widgets, and open applications. ShareX supports capturing all displays simultaneously or selecting a specific monitor.

Region Capture

The most frequently used capture mode. Press the hotkey and drag to select a rectangular region of your screen. ShareX shows a magnifier and crosshair for pixel-perfect selection. You can also use the Region (Light) mode for a simpler, faster selection without the magnifier.

Active Window Capture

Instantly capture the currently focused window — no manual selection needed. ShareX can capture window borders, transparency, and even windows that are partially off-screen. Use Active Monitor to capture only the monitor where your cursor is located.

Additional Capture Types

  • Scrolling Capture — Capture entire web pages or long documents that extend beyond the viewport
  • Auto Capture — Schedule automatic screenshots at intervals (every N seconds)
  • Screen Recording (GIF) — Record your screen activity as an animated GIF
  • Screen Recording (Video) — Record video with audio using FFmpeg
  • Menu Capture — Capture context menus and dropdowns that would normally disappear
  • Freehand Capture — Draw a freeform shape to capture irregular regions
  • Polygon Capture — Click to define a polygonal capture area
  • Last Region — Repeat your last region capture without re-selecting

After Capture Tasks

Every capture can trigger a chain of automated actions:

  • Open in image editor for annotation
  • Copy to clipboard
  • Save to a local file with custom naming
  • Upload to your configured destinations
  • Run OCR to extract text
  • Add image effects (watermark, shadow, border)

File Naming and Organization

ShareX lets you define custom file naming patterns using variables like date, time, window title, and more. You can organize screenshots into date-based folders automatically, ensuring your captures are always easy to find.

Multi-Monitor Support

For setups with multiple monitors, ShareX provides per-monitor capture, all-monitors capture, and the ability to combine all monitors into a single image. Configure separate hotkeys for each monitor if desired.
