JPG Format in ShareX

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy compressed image format ideal for photographs and complex images where file size is more important than perfect quality.

Why Use JPG

• Smaller file sizes — Typically 50-80% smaller than PNG for photos
• Universal compatibility — The most widely supported image format
• Good for photos — Lossy compression is less noticeable on photographic content
• Adjustable quality — Control the trade-off between quality and file size

Limitations for Screenshots

JPG uses lossy compression, which means:

• Text becomes blurry — Fine text and UI elements show compression artifacts
• No transparency — JPG does not support alpha channels
• Generation loss — Re-saving a JPG multiple times degrades quality further

ShareX JPG Settings

Configure JPG output in Task Settings → Image:

• Quality level (0-100) — Higher values mean better quality but larger files
• Recommended: 85-95 for screenshots, 70-85 for photo sharing

Best Use Cases

• Sharing photo-heavy screenshots via email or messaging
• Reducing file size when PNG is too large
• Quick sharing where perfect quality is not required

For most ShareX screenshots, PNG is recommended. Use JPG when you need significantly smaller files and can accept some quality loss.
