PNG Format - ShareX Screenshot Output

Save ShareX captures as PNG — when to use this format, quality and file size comparison, and how to set it as your default output.

PNG Format in ShareX

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is ShareX's default screenshot format and the recommended choice for most users. It provides lossless compression, meaning your screenshots retain 100% of their quality.

Why Use PNG

  • Lossless quality — No compression artifacts, every pixel is preserved
  • Full transparency support — Alpha channel for transparent backgrounds
  • Wide compatibility — Supported by every browser, image viewer, and editor
  • Optimal for screenshots — Text and UI elements look crisp and clear

ShareX PNG Settings

You can configure PNG output in Task Settings → Image tab:

  • PNG compression level — Balance between file size and encoding speed
  • Color depth — 24-bit (16.7M colors) or 32-bit (with alpha)
  • Interlacing — Progressive loading for web use

When to Use Other Formats

  • Use JPG for photo-heavy screenshots where file size matters more than quality
  • Use WebP for web content when you need both quality and small file size
  • Use GIF when capturing animated content

PNG is the best default choice — you can always convert to other formats later using ShareX's built-in tools.
