MP4 Format in ShareX

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format and ShareX's default for screen recordings. It uses H.264 video codec and AAC audio for excellent quality-to-size ratio.

Why Record in MP4

ShareX MP4 Settings

Configure in Task Settings → Screen Recorder → Screen recording options:

• Video codec — H.264 (recommended) or H.265/HEVC
• Audio codec — AAC (recommended) or MP3
• Quality / CRF — Lower CRF = higher quality (CRF 23 is a good default)
• FPS — 30 FPS for smooth video, 15-20 FPS for tutorials
• Preset — Faster encoding vs. smaller file size (medium is a good balance)

Requirements

MP4 recording requires FFmpeg. ShareX uses FFmpeg for:

• Video encoding (H.264, H.265)
• Audio encoding (AAC)
• Muxing audio and video streams

Recording Tips

• Close unnecessary applications to reduce CPU load during recording
• Record at your screen's native resolution for the sharpest output
• Use 30 FPS for smooth motion; use 15 FPS for tutorials to save space
• Test your audio levels before important recordings
