TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a professional-grade image format used primarily in publishing, photography, and archival applications.

TIFF Features

• Lossless compression — LZW and ZIP compression options
• High color depth — Supports 16-bit and 32-bit per channel
• Multi-page — Can store multiple images in one file
• Metadata rich — Extensive EXIF and custom tag support
• Layers — Supports layer data (in some variants)

When to Use TIFF

TIFF is a specialized format for professional workflows:

• Print publishing — Industry standard for high-quality print
• Archival storage — Long-term preservation of important images

Why Not TIFF for Screenshots

• Very large files — Much larger than PNG for the same content
• Limited web support — Browsers don't display TIFF natively
• Overkill — PNG provides lossless quality adequate for screenshots
• Slower processing — Encoding and decoding take longer

For everyday screenshots, PNG is the recommended format. Use TIFF only when your workflow specifically requires it.
